Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s Goodnight Mommy was released on Blu Ray and VOD this week and, more than any other horror film to come out this year, it had a lot to live up to. Many have toted it as the best horror film of the year and one of the best movies of the year, period.
But did the feature actually earn that title?
Technically, yes.
2015 has been one of the weakest years for film in recent memory. The horror this year, especially, has been abysmal. You know you’re in trouble when Unfriended is one of the highlights of the year.
Goodnight Mommy is a smart, well paced thriller that has an obvious twist and a not-so-obvious twist that’ll really shake your brain like a snow globe. The performances all around are strong and the imagery, at times, can be quite startling. For these reasons, Goodnight Mommy is a moderately strong recommend.
